GREELEY AND ME

Running around NY it’s nice to bump into people you know.  Horace Greeley was one of the most important people in the 19th Century.  Founder and powerful editor of the NY Tribune, taking it from the dawn of journalism in the US, creating a dynamic anti-slavery vessel. He was a great Radical Republican (until he wasn’t). Tommy Nast lampooned him ferociously. Greeley deserved some of it because he was intellectually sloppy as well as hilarious to look at. But anyone who cares about human rights in the US and the good moral work that can be done in journalism has to dig HG. I always drop by to say hi.
