Pico, a Cruise and Me

This month Conde Nast Traveler asked the wonderful writer Pico Iyer to write about his first cruise experience, and asked me to illustrate it. As it happened I had been to some of the same places he had! Here are some of the drawings and painting done for the article as well as some photos of those places.

Here’s Iyer in the dining room of his ship. I used some of the same decor of the ship’s dining room that I recalled.

The dining room decor and lighting were suggested by our snaps.

This the main road in the 2,500 year old city of Ephesus,Turkey a site of  technological and religious significance. I put Pico into this setting, sans all the tourists!
His mother, religious scholar Nandini Nanak Mehta, now 80, needed a cruise as her walking was now affected by age.  However at the Hermitage in St. Petersburg she found the energy to zip up the stairs.
My memories of the Hermitage was of the stairs like these and the statue-like ladies who “mind” the art.
Pico appreciated the time that the long days at sea afford for reading and reflection. I did too, but also found moments to drift away. Not bad either!

Climate Change Proof

Time to stop the BS about Climate Change.  It is real.  It is bad for you and your children. There is not much time.  This and the corporate censor on debate and government are our biggest problems we need to address now.

Here is the proof.  This chart by NASA. CO2 has never been this high in the last 600,000 year. Temps follow CO2. Print this out.  Make cards, T-shirts.  Mention it everyday. And see this video by James Balog. The stakes have never been this high.

AMID CAPECI

Amid was a kind of person we see rarely in our field, someone who could understand the value of what we do, actually advocate for it and even, if need be, fight for an illustration. In retrospect now I only see how rare that is.  He had power in his office; a trust in him by editors to be an editor in his own right.  His track record bore this out.  But non of this can inform you of how decent and kind he was.  His was an understanding and encouraging voice on the phone and in person. And beneath that sweetness was the toughness of a hard-nosed journalist.
Here are some things we did together.
Here are a couple of pieces from my days as the movie guy.  Going to the movies with Peter Travers, we didn’t really see a good flick in the 2 years I did this.  But there was Clint Eastwood in Absolute Power.
Then Madonna in Evita.
Warren Beatty liked this so much (and her) that he asked me to do the poster for his last good film: Bulworth.  I credit Amid with this even though he didn’t make a dime.
Here’s Bush as grill man, selling filthy junk food to America in the Iraq War run-up.
My last piece for him at Newsweek. Paul Krugman watching as Obama taps Wall Street to regulate itself.
Here’s a story that I think tells a lot about him.  For National Affairs the story was on how Bush was trying to ex-out Public Broadcasting.  Here are my funny, but tapered ideas:
Big Bird as a turkey.
Bush spying on Bert and Ernie.
Then Amid said, “How about Abu Graib?”  I asked, “Are you serious?” He said, “Let’s just see how far we can push this.”  Am I hearing correctly????  When do you hear art directors speak like this?
Anyway, here’s his idea!!
We all settled on the jail cell, with Bush as the idiotic, depraved Lynndie England.
I am very unaccustomed to having a designer ask for stronger work.  But that was Amid.
A wise man/warrior/philosopher-prince of graphic art, in a place where he could really make a difference. And one of the ways he did that was with illustration. Peace Amid. We carry on better for knowing you.

Cab Calloway and Me

Next Sunday will see the premiere of Cab Calloway Sketches on PBS (check your local time), which is a wonderful doc by Gail Levin in which I was asked to render Cab almost life size on a wall.  The amazing animation at the end has Cab jumping off the wall and dancing with Alvin Ailey’s brilliant Matthew Rushing.  Animation by Asterisk Studios. Very honored to be involved in this tribute to the hide-e-ho man. Always a big fan of his and the great Harlem Renaissance. I saw Cab when I was a kid. Unforgettable.

Watch Steve Brodner sketches Cab Calloway Part 2 on PBS. See more from American Masters.

Odd Couple of the Day

”On January 31, Newt Gingrich was  told that he was no longer wanted in the state of Florida.  Soon he  found himself looking for a home in the Super Tuesday states along with his similarly-hated friend Mitt Romney. Can two severely messed-up men share a dysfunctional political party without driving each other crazy?!!!!!”

Thanks to Ron Brownstein and Jan Zimmeck for making this happen. And to Ron for the shout-out on this morning’s interesting chatfest with the always interesting Soledad O’Brien. Back atcha.
